Barnardos West Devon Children's Centres

Barnardos West Devon children's centres is part of an integrated hub of services for families with children under 5 in the area. The centre supports families affected by a range of issues such as poor mental health, domestic abuse, housing issues, debt, parenting advice, young parents and children with additional needs. It also offers a range of universal stay and play sessions.

Tavistock, Okehampton & Hatherleigh Area Children's Centres are part of a cluster of Barnardo's Centre's covering West Devon.
The Cluster serves to reach the outlying areas through sessions or one to one support.
The Centres have a strong focus on supporting families affected by Domestic Abuse and have run Freedom Courses and Pattern Changing Courses to support women and children . The Centres provide a creche for children to receive positive play experiences and staff are adept at recognising the effects of emotional and physical abuse of children and supporting them appropriately. Where relevant children & families can be referred into theraputic support sessions.
The Centre's Family Support Staff work to identify the most relevant support for families affected by abuse and work with SPLITZ, MARAC, CYPS and IDVA where relevant.
The Centres have a history of self referrals from women affected by abuse and have supported them to feel more empowered and identify positive outcomes for themselves and their children.The Centres work with families and other agencies and is committed to minimising the likelihood of future danger.
Rural isolation is a significant issue for these centres and staff work relentlessly with key partner agencies such as midwifery, health, mental health, police and education to help families feel supported with significant issues affecting family life and to provide the basics of a loving, safe, nuturing environment for their child.
The OFSTED inspection in October 2014 cited the centre as "going above and beyond what is expected of them to best support families and children in this area".

We will help you find support that will enable you to keep yourself & your children safe from harm. We pride ourselves on our ability to create the best care package to every situation.

  2. We understand that you are likely to need help with your housing and have excellent links with local housing schemes. We can accompany you to any appointments and support you to find a safe home.

  3. We understand that you may have drug and alcohol issues and can support you discreetly to link in with the agency or service that can help you.

  4. We can support you with employability, maths and english skills, self esteem courses, domestic abuse courses, parenting courses and CV writing. We can offer this on a one to one basis or in a group setting.

  5. We have very strong links with the Citizens Advice Bureau and DATA who offer one to one support.

  6. We can support you to access Mental Health Services, your GP and/or Health Visitor. We can also offer self esteem support.

  7. Our staff pride themselves on being flexible, innovative and creative on tailor-making their support to fit around your needs. If we do not know the answers then we will find someone that does.

  8. Here in the West Devon Cluster of Children's Centres we understand that emotional & physical abuse can impact on all areas of your life & that of your children. We will help you find support that will enable you to keep yourself & your children safe from harm.

  9. Not only can staff support on a one to one basis but we can help you access a Pattern Changing group that will empower you to sustain long term changes in the future for the benefit of you and your children. Our creches strive to create a warm, welcoming and nurturing environment for your child to thrive in.
