Devon Rape and Sexual Abuse Helpline

We provide a free, anonymous, confidential listening and support helpline which can help to relieve the trauma and distress of rape, sexual violence and childhood sexual abuse. Our service is for women and men over 16 years of age who have been raped or sexually abused, either recently or in the past. We also offer support and information to families, friends and professionals. Our Line operates 3 evenings per week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 7pm - 10pm

We are a freephone, out of hours service, providing listening, support and crisis information to people who have been raped or sexually abused either recently, or in the past. We also provide longer term support for survivors of childhood sexual abuse; because we know that it can take some time to heal from these experiences. Using the Line can be invaluable in taking a first step for people to talk about their experience anonymously and may help to begin ease the suffering and distress which may be experienced as a result of abuse.
We understand the importance of a respectful response to a disclosure and that it can make a huge difference as to how a person may move on to manage their recovery. We offer something fairly unique. We are a place where you can feel heard and believed, and where you could explore your feelings and options in a safe space, without an imperative to immediately do anything. Many survivors feel alone and we address that by listening attentively, acceptingly and without judgement. We also support regular callers, sometimes over many years, who may already be accessing counselling, but need additional support during their recovery.

We know that the consequences of sexual abuse can be devastating and how survivors’ use coping strategies. These behaviours are perfectly normal under the circumstances and we try to help by supporting callers to try to find less harmful ways of coping with the pain of their trauma.

We have information on a range of abuse support services in Devon and can make this available to callers if wanted. Contacting other services can be daunting and we can be a bridge between you and other support services, offering information and support. Our ethos is to empower you to make decisions for yourself; consequently you might begin to feel more in control of the situation.

The Line is operated by fully trained and supervised volunteer Listeners.
Take an important step in your recovery from rape or sexual abuse. Speak to someone anonymously. One call can help to make sense of what has happened – and to help you move forward in life.
