Shekinah

Shekinah is a Devon based charity in its 23rd year providing opportunities for people in recovery. This may include recovery from homelessness, drug & alcohol issues, offending or mental ill health. We have a range of projects across a number of locations and we provide a safe space for people to develop their skills, regain their self-worth and go on to live independent and fulfilling lives.

The purpose of our projects which include a Drop-in Centre, Training & Employability Academy, 24 bed Hostel for single homeless, a Horticulture Project and two Charity Shops is to encourage individuals to fulfil their potential and break free from chaotic and destructive lifestyles.
Projects often provide the second chance much needed, improving skills, qualifications, confidence, self esteem and general health.
Our Training Academy offer a wide range of courses including, Maths, It, Re:construct - Bricklaying, Plastering, Painting & Decorating, Stress and Anger Management, Re:fit (healthy living and physical activity), Re:active (weekly weight management and healthy living programme), Re:vive (Personal Development Programme addressing past issues) and many other courses and workshops.
Following completion of training courses, learners are encouraged to progress into a Ready for Work programme with our Employability Team which includes personal development, behind he scenes visits to local business, 2 full days pre-employment training and a 4 week unpaid work placement with full support throughout. Shekinah consistently top the table out of 14 cities nationally in assisting the 'hardest to reach' into sustained work.
The Drop-in Centre, often the first point of contact for our clients receives around 50 people a day and offers a range of services including on-site access to PATH (Plymouth Access to Housing), on-site drug & alcohol counselling with HARBOUR, on-site medical professionals - GP, Practice Nurse, Blood Borne Virus Nurse, Chiropodist, hot meals, showers, clothing, signposting, help with Benefits etc.
Our 'Growing for Life' Horticulture project provides a safe, clean, therapeutic site with an emphasis on growing organically and in harmony with our environment. This project began in Dartmoor Prison and then continued on 'the outside' in 2009, with support from The Eden Project. Here, we work predominately with ex-offenders and offer a holistic approach to recovery and healing which enables people to re-engage with the land and their place in the cycle of life by working with the seasons to grow vegetables naturally, using no chemicals or artificial fertilisers.
Across all our diverse projects we work closely with other agencies working in the same field and receive referrals from the Probabtion Service (situated on-site in our Training & Employability Academy), Youth Offending Service, Prolific Offending Team, Drug & Alcohol Agencies, Supported Housing, Mental Health Services, Independent Living Team, Learning Disability Service, PATH, Harbour, Job Centre PLUSS, Business in the Community (also located on-site)
A recent quote from a client sums up what Shekinah is all about:
"Coming here has shown me that I'm not stuck. I can make a difference. I can change."
